POLY(1,4-BUTYLENE TEREPHTHALATE) - Risk and Safety
POLY(1,4-BUTYLENE TEREPHTHALATE) - Introduction
The polymer formed by the polymerization of dimethyl 1,4-phthalate with 1,4-butanediol is commonly referred to as Polybutylene Terephthalate (abbreviated as PBT). The following is an introduction to the nature, use, preparation and safety information of PBT:
Nature:
PBT is a semi-crystalline polymer with good mechanical properties, heat resistance and chemical resistance. It has low water absorption, excellent electrical insulation properties and dimensional stability. In addition, PBT also has high bending strength and hardness, which can maintain comprehensive performance in a wide temperature range.
Use:
PBT has a wide range of applications. Due to its good mechanical properties and dimensional stability, it is often used in the manufacture of electronic and electrical industry parts, such as sockets, connectors, switches and insulating materials. In addition, PBT can also be used as a raw material for the manufacture of synthetic fibers in the textile field.
Preparation Method:
The preparation of PBT is usually obtained by transesterification of dimethyl 1,4-phthalate with 1,4-butanediol. First, the two raw materials are added to the reactor, and the catalyst is added to make the reaction proceed under certain temperature and pressure conditions. The by-product dimethyl formate (a side reaction product of transesterification) is removed by water or other means to give the final PBT polymer.
Safety Information:
PBT is a relatively safe material, but the following matters should be paid attention to during handling and use:
-Avoid dust and smoke during operation to avoid inhalation.
-In case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
-Avoid exposure to high temperatures, fire sources and strong oxidants to prevent fire or explosion.
-Waste should be disposed of properly and comply with relevant environmental regulations.
